It is less than a month before WWDC 2025, and Apple has yet to reveal its AI-powered Siri to all. After years of big promises and high-profile hires, the tech giant trails its rivals in AI, and the gap keeps growing.
Back in 2018, Apple brought in Google’s John Giannandrea to lead its AI efforts. He aimed to unify Apple’s scattered teams and fix Siri. Seven years later, the assistant hasn’t caught up. While Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI launch advanced AI tools, Apple continues to delay its biggest AI updates.

At WWDC 2023, Apple promised “Apple Intelligence,” featuring writing tools, notification summaries, and a rebuilt Siri. The announcement sparked a brief stock rally. But many features arrived late, and some, like the new Siri, never shipped. Internal tests showed major reliability issues, so Apple pulled the plug before launch. Lawsuits followed.
Inside Apple, leadership fights and a conservative culture have slowed progress. The company has fewer AI engineers and less infrastructure than its competitors. Even Giannandrea lost control of the Siri team earlier this year.
Apple still holds a hardware advantage and a billion-device user base. But if it can’t get AI right, and soon, its dominance may not last.
Meanwhile, according to a Bloomberg report, all upcoming Apple operating systems will be identified by year, instead of the current system of “version number.” This means that the current iOS 18 will be followed by “iOS 26,” while other platform updates could be known as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, and so on.
While these details will be confirmed only at the WWDC 2025, users can check more details about the Apple event here.
